Biography

Dr. Ramwant Gupta is currently an assistant professor in Biology at Fiji National University, Fiji Islands. His current research project focus on plant reproductive biology, pollen-pistil dynamics in particular, to understand sexual reproduction in plants under varied climatic condition. Dr. Gupta’s area of expertise include photosynthesis, thylakoid components and their performance in adverse conditions, molecular markers and production of double haploid plants using plant tissue culture technique. Prior to this Dr. Gupta has been completed 4 years Post-Doctoral research experiences from premier Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India. He worked out molecular characterization of protogynous lines of Indian mustard using S-locus specific markers; pollen-pistil interaction using fluorescence microscopy; stigma receptivity duration based on enzymatic reactions. He used different plant hormones in combination to synchronies flowering pattern in wheat for hybrid seed production. The identified SCAR markers have been validated in restorer line and the respective hybrids of Indian mustard. He has developed a simple modified DNA extraction protocol from seed for PCR amplification and research with molecular markers for characterization and genetic purity testing of varieties of Indian mustard. Dr. Gupta has successfully completed his master degree in Plant Science, University of Lucknow, India followed by Doctoral degree with Plant Physiology (as major) and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (as minor) from first Indian Agriculture University i.e., G. B. Pant University of Agric. & Tech., Pantnagar, India. Dr. Gupta has worked on “Response of photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence and molecular characteristics in finger millet (Eleusine coracana L.) influenced by bio-chemical fertilizers” during his Ph.D. The research work undertaken by him has led to publishing many research papers in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and conference articles. Dr. Gupta has received post-doctoral fellowship from Indian Agricultural Institute, India and Agriculture Research Organization Israel. He also received research grants from Fiji National University and Sugarcane Research Institute Fiji.
