Biography

Dr. Matteliano is a clinical assistant professor in the department of Rehabilitation Sciences. Dr. Matteliano has combined her rehabilitation background with research in areas of cultural competence. She has co-directed the study abroad program, “Health in Brazil”, a reciprocal exchange between the University at Buffalo and UNIPAC (Brazil) since 2004. Her interests in diversity and culture complemented her role as the project director for Culture in the Curriculum (2006-2011). The purpose of this project was to provide a resource for faculty in rehabilitation programs to integrate cultural competency education throughout the curricula. This project was developed by CIRRIE, through a grant from NIDRR. Guides on cultural competence are available on the CIRRIE website (http://www.cirrie.buffalo.edu/curriculum/). Dr. Matteliano has presented on cultural competent health care provision at several conferences in the United States, Brazil, and Europe. Her most recent opportunity in the area of cultural diversity is to serve on a panel of expert advisors for the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Project (DRRP) funded by NIDRR. Dr. Matteliano’s research on culturally competent health care provision has been recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Matteliano continues to conduct research in areas of stroke rehabilitation including the use of telerehabilitation and is presenting these results at the American Occupational Therapy Association conference in April 2013.
