Strategies Parents Use to Support Communication of their Children Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The purpose of this paper is to examine strategies parents use to support communication of their children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The study used a qualitative approach. The study revealed that parents stated the strategies they use include visual communication like American sign language, gestures and spoken English. Some ways parents used to promote visual communication included face-to-face communication, looking directly at the child and facing them when communicating, without exaggerating mouth movements and seeking attention. The study revealed two types of visual communication strategies that parents used: Implicit and explicit strategies to get attention. Some parents believed that hearing aids and speech therapy also support their children’s communication.
