Biography

Dr. Dirk Wildemeersch completed his medical training at the University of Ghent, Belgium, and graduated in gynecology in 1976, in South Africa. He returned to Belgium and started a gynecological practice. His research and development activities started in 1985, after 10 years of busy gynecological and obstetrical practice, in collaboration with a group of gynecologists at the University of Ghent, Belgium, guided by Prof. Michel Thiery. The IUD-group later became known as the International Study Group on Intrauterine Drug Delivery Dirk Wildemeersch is currently involved in the optimization of new, innovative drug delivery systems for use in the uterus and vagina. He is an advisor in devising new concepts in controlled release for contraception, gynecological treatment, and the prevention of infectious diseases. Finding solutions for women’s needs, improvements of current IUDs and IUSs, and attempting to enhance women’s health by developing new therapeutic drug delivery systemremains a commitment to women in developed as well as developing countries. There is still resistance regarding the use and the potential advantages of the frameless technology notwithstanding its obvious design advantages that can greatly benefit young women. In his practice, serving mostly young nulliparous women, he and his assistants observe the advantages of the anchored systems daily. Proper counseling, attention to comfort and skillful insertion continue to be part of his daily life, as well as training of colleagues, from Belgium or abroad.
