Abstract

Management of low vision in microphthalmos in school going children

The aim of the study is to analyze optical correction and utilization of low vision aids in school going kids in Microphthalmos.Prospective, Cross sectional study was performed in various Tertiary eye care centers and Blind schools within the period of 1.5 years. Subjects who are school going and in the age group of 5 to 20 years were included in the study. Subjects who fall under the criteria of Low vision and having Microphthalmos along with Iris and Choroidal Coloboma were included in the study. Full Refractive correction for distance and near along with Slit lamp Evaluation and Fundus Evaluation was performed in each and every patient. Low vision Aids were prescribed as per the need of the subject. Subject was trained for 3 months for usage of low vision aid. 3 months follow up was taken and which device is used maximum was analyzed. Data was analyzed using Microsoft office Excel version 13 and SPSS software 113 subjects having Microphthalmos were enrolled in the study. Mean age of the subjects was 13.8 years. 56% of the subjects were male and 44 % were female. In 89% of the cases, Myopic Refractive error was noticed and Visual Acuity was improved up to some extent. In 69% of subjects, they could read till N10 either unaided or with distance correction glasses. Rest 31% subjects were analyzed for magnifiers for near. Vision was improved to N6 by prescribing High add spectacles of variable power as per the need and or Magnifiers. In 13% of the subjects Non optical devices such as large print books along with Reading stand were prescribed. Children with Microphthalmos benefits from Refraction and Low vision aids
