Parasomnia

Parasomnia is a class of sleep disorders that involve abnormal behaviors, movements, emotions, dreams and perceptions that occur while falling asleep or when you are sleeping, between sleep stages, or during arousal from sleep. Parasomnias are dissociated sleep states which are partial arousals during the transitions between wakefulness and Non-REM sleep, or wakefulness and REM sleep.

Parasomnia may occur as a person is falling asleep or at any point in the sleep cycle. If they occur while falling asleep, a person may experience disturbing hallucinations or sleep paralysis, which is when the body is unable to move for seconds or minutes. Parasomnia can be quite frightening, especially when it occurs with hallucinations.
