Abstract :

Despite the dramatic increase of cardiac interventions in the cath lab, particularly in the elderly and in patients with compromised general health, a substantial percentage of overaged patients still require surgical treatment. The most common operations performed in the elderly are coronary bypass or valve surgery without comorbidities. According to a large body of literature on elderly patients, it appears that three factors are critical in determining the outcome: comorbidities, use of mammary artery and duration of extracorporeal circulation. In this presentation, we describe a double bypass and aortic valve replacement in a 92-year-old woman with comorbidities. It is possibly the eldest patient described who underwent a combined operation successfully thanks to the contribution of modern knowledge and technology achieving an excellent outcome.
