Abstract :

The acute myocardial infarction, a complication of acute coronary syndrome is a leading cause of death in industrialized countries. The incidence of these diseases has increased, but the mortality rate among patients decreased over the years. This was a prospective observational study in which data were collected through interviews with patients and their families and by consulting medical records and laboratory tests. We analyzed data of 996 patients who had the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome who were admitted to the ICU from 2003-2010. For the study of in-hospital mortality, we calculated the mortality rate of the years studied and the bivariate Spearman correlation was used to verify the significance of the values found. There was a reduction in mortality due to acute coronary syndromes over the years evaluated, the Spearman bivariate correlation found a significant relationship (p =-0,059). The highest percentage of deaths were found in 2008 (17.6%), lowest in 2009 (3.8%). Of the total sample, 67.67% were men and 32.32% women. The average mortality between 2003 and 2010 was 11.8% for women and 7.12% for men. In 2010, there was a reversal in the average number of deaths, which is the only year in which the male mortality rate (7.37%) was higher than female (2.04%). This study showed a statistically significant reduction in hospital mortality for acute coronary syndrome between 2003 and 2010, which can be explained by the use of protocols and clinical and pharmacological interventionist steps by the ICU medical staff.
