Abstract :

Routine allopathic chemotherapy for cancer treatment has several side and toxic effects. Since long time Unani medicine is being used to cure cancer. More than 20 Unani herbal drugs are being used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Several mechanisms are likely to account for the observed pharmacological effects. The most important being direct cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, antioxidation and immunomodulation. These Unani herbal drugs may help to synergize the anticancer effects and reduce the side effects of conventional drugs. The different plants used are Dillenia indica, Oroxylum indicum, Terminalia arjuna, etc. The proposed lecture will comprise the art of Unani medicines in cancer treatment. Besides, the mechanism of action and future perspectives will be discussed.
