Abstract :

Education for medicines was integrated into the Japanese junior high school Health and Physical Education (HPE) guidelines in 2012, in tandem with revisions to the course of study. However, according to the survey we conducted targeting high school students in Gifu prefecture, it became clear that there were many students who think that they have never attended education for medicines. In this research, we survey knowledge, behavior and attitudes about medicines among high school first graders in Japan. Furthermore, we clarify the relationship between awareness of taking the class of education for medicines and behavior, attitudes and knowledge about medicines. A questionnaire survey was administered at 81 high schools throughout Japan from May to August 2017. We received valid responses from 17,437 students (8,205 males and 9,232 females). Responding to a question on whether they were aware of the class of education for medicines, 29.5% of the students answered ??Yes??, 45.2%-I don??t know and 24.9%-No. Students with awareness of the class tended to have more knowledge and take favorable attitudes and behaviors than non-aware students. Furthermore, students with positive attitude were likely to take medicines appropriately. The results of this survey suggest that ongoing implementation of the class of education for medicines promotes students to acquire knowledge and favorable behavior and attitudes about medicines. In future, further development of both the classes and the instructions are required to accomplish the purpose given in the course of study.
