Abstract :

It is essential to offer adequate social support during cancer treatment. It has been found that those cancer patients who feel supported during medical treatment report better quality of life and wellbeing at later years of life. Doctors and nursing staff at the hospitals give treatment and medical attention. But at the same time, patients need moral support and good wishes from people around who are not part of medical team. In most societies, friends and family become key and the starting point for cancer patients. Especially for those patients with few relationships, peers, friends, and neighbors have the potential to provide required solace and support. Over and above, living with a partner means greater availability of support system. When cancer symptoms are detected, patients are in severe disturbed frame of mind. In such situations, having love ones around friends and family care givers provide “invaluable resources” to cancer patients. They help patients cope with (a) stress, and (b) emotional turmoil. This aspect becomes more important for treatment cancer patients that come with lengthy recovery thereafter; this particular situation demands that family care givers should be capable of supporting patients in a sustained manner. There exists a reliable (and definite) relationship between social support and health outcomes of cancer patients. Objective of this paper is to (a) provide the framework within which support social to can cancer patients can be provided by family members, friend and others, and (b) challenges associated with offering support system. The conclusion of this paper is that the diagnosis and treatment of cancer involves traumatic series of events. Also, in situations of long-term treatment, cancer patients face an isolating experience. In terms of challenges, it is uphill task to mobilize people who can provide support to cancer patients so that they receive required help to make treatment procedure less troublesome
