Abstract :

Background & Aim: Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava (PLSVC) is an uncommon vascular anomaly. It is usually asymptomatic and is detected by incidence. The incidence of PLSVC was seldom to be evaluated in normal population. In our retrospective study, we aim to find the incidence of PLSVC in normal neonate population by transthoracic echocardiography. We also studied the association of PLSVC and asymptomatic congenital heart diseases. Method: In this retrospective study, we observed health neonate in our echocardiography from 2008 to 2017. Based on the echocardiography findings, we categorized patients into two groups, PLSVC group and control group (patients without PLSVC). Chi-square and logistic regression tests were used for data analysis. Result: In this study, we assessed 19,488 neonates, of which 56 patients were assigned to the endometriosis group while the remaining 19,432 subjects comprised the control group. We found the incidence of PLSVC was 0.29% in our population. In the PLSVC group, 3.6% patients found to have bicuspid aortic valve and 10.7% patients found to have secundum type atrial septal defect. Both incidence of association was higher than in the control groups. Conclusion: The incidence of PLSVC in Taiwan neonates was 0.29% in echocardiography examination. Although the PLSVC was asymptomatic and no health concern, they still have higher incidence to have bicuspid aortic valve and secundum type atrial defect, which may need further follow up and evaluation.
