Abstract :

Antioxidant potential and total phenolic content of ethanolic extracts of the root of Bauhinia vahlii were evaluated. The extract of root contained higher levels of total phenolics and tannins. Extracts were screened for non enzymatic antioxidant activity using various in vitro antioxidant assays. The methods used were 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power assay. Various concentrations of extract were prepared and readings were taken in triplicates. Results obtained were compared with ascorbic acid which was taken as a standard. Significant free radical scavenging activity was observed in plant extract. This study has to some extent validated the antioxidant potential of the root of B. vahlii . This plant needs further study to evaluate more of its beneficial effects for medicinal use.
