Abstract :

Introduction: Informed consent is an important aspect in patient’s care. Failings in this area may result in patient dissatisfaction or litigation. Consent Form 2 is used in consenting patients <16 years of age. The aim of this project is to assess our practice in consenting paediatrics surgery patients & institute changes to maintain best practice. Patients and Methods: Baseline data were collected retrospectively over one month period from August 2023 to September 2023 on a sample of 24 cases. This was guided by ORMIS to identify emergency paediatrics surgeries done & data was collected from CWS scanned notes. We could not comment on number of copies filled or if the patient was given a copy or not before surgery. Results: Poor documentation of risks 54%, Extra procedure 83%, Inteded Benefits 79%, Leaflets given in 21%, Confirmation of consent 4%, Full Consenter Details 88% Total percentage of procedures done: Scrotal exploration 67%, Appendicectomy 21% & Miscellaneous 13%. Conclusion: Informed consent is an important aspect in patient care. Failings in this area may result in patient dissatisfaction or litigation. The process of consenting paeditrics patient can be improved in many aspects; especially Risk documentation, extra procedure, intended benefit, leaflets given to patients & Full consenter details. This can happen by introducing procedure specific pre-printed consents targeting the most common paeditrics surgeries done by our unit
