Abstract :

This workshop will share the journey of an African American gay male and how he has dealt with living with HIV for the last eight years, providing a first-hand account of working in HIV prevention through diagnosis to what life is like at present. The session will highlight not only the challenges and struggles of living with HIV, but also life as part of being a mixed status couple. The presenter will address a range of issues, including the blurred and/or non-existent lines between mental and physical health and the vital roles they play in overcoming the challenges of daily life; the challenges of medication adherence; and how communications regarding PrEP are being used to influence sexual behavior. He will engage participants in the difficult conversations we need to have around stigma, and address ways to change the narrative in public health settings using education, experience, and social media platforms.
