Abstract :

GMP in formulation development: The formulation process of a cosmetic product is one of the critical steps in developing a new product. GMP during the development procedure has been a rather ambiguous topic in the cosmetics industry. Even though regulatory guidelines are critical elements towards formulation development, there is no strict regulation about GMP while developing a cosmetic product. The global presence of a brand and corporate values and identity are the driving forces for a company to follow GLP/GMP while developing a new cosmetic. The philosophy and the positioning of a company in the frame of GMP during the development process involve many different aspects. It may start from the raw materials selection that will be used in the final formula, to GMP followed during the trial production of the cosmetic. In particular, the main topics that should be observed during the development of the formula include: Raw Materials (approved suppliers, specifications, test methods, manufacturing procedures, storage conditions, certificates of conformance, etc.), the stability testing of the lab batches (test protocols, deviation of the measurements, evaluation of the results), the compatibility testing in terms of different packaging materials, microbiology testing, the safety and the efficacy tests (approved external partners, standard procedures followed, deviations from the procedures, evaluation of the results, documentation), the pilot and trial production (manufacturing process, validations, cleaning and sanitization, filling). By presenting these points, this review aims to highlight how GMP interferes with the development process of a new cosmetic product, the impact of the positioning of the company in the success of the final product, as well as future trends and challenges in this field
