Abstract :

There has not been much discussion on the best practices in managing fracture nonunion in osteoporotic bones. A literature review was carried out to know the incidence of nonunion of fractures in osteoporotic bones, state the risk of fracture occurrence in osteoporotic bone, figure out the causes/pathophysiology of fracture nonunion in osteoporotic bone and to discuss the treatment of nonunion of osteoporotic bone fractures. Findings showed that fracture nonunion is not as common as previously thought, with just a 1.9% risk of occurrence. However, the cost of treatment is high. Therefore, various treatments have been employed for fracture nonunion, including plates and screws with autologous bone graft, osteotomy with internal fixation, stem cells, and teriparatide. Teriparatide has shown promising results in treating fracture nonunion and will work to prevent osteoporotic fractures and nonunions. However, it has a higher cost implication.
