Evaluation of CAD/CAM resin nano-ceramic material surface roughness and color stability after using different scaling methods

Abstract :

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of various scaling procedures on surface roughness and color change on a CAD/CAM resin nano-ceramic restorative material.

Materials and Methods: Seventy disks (5mm diameter, 0.5mm thickness) of RNC material were cemented in standardized cavities, prepared by a specially designed reference guide in bovine teeth. The surfaces of the specimens were exposed to different scaling methods simulating standard clinical conditions, using a custommade scaling apparatus of a double pan balance. The specimens were assigned to 3 main groups: no scaling (control), ultrasonic scaling (U) and manual (M) scaling. Each group was then divided into 3 subgroups according to scaling tip material; stainless steel tip (S), plastic tip (P) and titanium tip (T). The surface texture was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with a profilometer and an atomic force microscopy. A spectrophotometer was used for color measurement. One-way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare between tip materials followed by Tukey’s and Mann-Whitney tests for pair-wise comparisons. Dunnett’s test was performed to compare control group with different scaling methods.

Results: Plastic curette resulted in the least surface alteration and color change. The significantly highest to lowest roughness and color change means are as follows: Control>UT>MT>US>MS>UP>MP. Deep scratches on ultrasonically scaled surfaces and numerous smaller scratches on hand-scaled surfaces were detected. The hand titanium, ultrasonic stainless steel and titanium groups were clinically unacceptable for color change.

Conclusion: The use of plastic hand instrument is recommended during routine maintenance procedure for RNC materials.

Engy Adel Ahmed Farag has experience in the field of dentistry for over 14 years. She has been a teaching staff member for more than six years at the Faculty of Dentistry, British University in Egypt. She presented the BUE in the Dental American Prosthetics Society 90th annual meeting in Chicago, March 2018. She is a team member and a contributor in a dental research funded by the BUE. She has completed Ph.D. in Fixed Prosthodontics from Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University, 2018; M.Sc. in Fixed Prosthodontics from Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University, 2010 and B.D.S. from Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University, 2003. Her main research concerns all recent and updates in dental ceramic materials and bioemulation.
