Abstract :

Indian system of medicine is one of the ancient systems of medicine in the world. It consists of different branches similar to the present day modern medicine. Principles regarding fetus, antenatal care, labor, foetal nutrition are described elaborately. There is the proper description of the various stages in the development of the foetus, description of various disorders in pregnancy, preparation of the labour room, stages of labour and management of complications. The thorough study of the development of the fetus and disorders in pregnancy, one can find the roots of modern-day epigenetics. Excellent herbal remedies are mentioned for the disorders and complications in pregnancy. The Sushruta Samhita which dates 1st millennium BCE mentions malpositions and presentations of fetus and remedies including medicinal and surgical to tackle with complicated birth conditions. Although there is no detailed procedure of caesarian section principles of delivery by laparotomy is mentioned. This system of medicine had done substantial progress in gynecology and obstetrics which is evident through ancient sculptures and archaeological sites. This presentation is the compilation of the references pertaining to the obstetrics in the Indian system of medicine.

Biography :

Mandar Mohan Ranade is having the meritorious academic career. He has completed his MS at the age of 27 years from Pune University. He is working as laparoscopic surgeon and Obstetrics and Gynaecology practitioner. He has given lectures and guidance to the common people and medical students regarding this subject. He is having his postgraduate study on an indigenous medicine used in IUGR. He has published more than 25 papers in reputed journals. He has worked in the government committees at the state and central level including one committee on prevention of vertical transmission of HIV from mother to fetus.
