Abstract :

Intracardiac blood filled cyst are uncommon primary cardiac tumors. They are frequently encountered in pediatric patients and are extremely rare when found in adults. Blood cysts are often asymptomatic but a few cases resulting in embolization and valvular dysfunction have been reported. This report highlights a 19-year old asymptomatic female who presented with an incidental finding of an intracardiac mass. A two dimensional echocardiogram revealed a well-defined movable cystic structure measuring 2.1 cm2 in area attached to the chordae tendineae of the anterior mitral valve. On the fourth hospital stay patient underwent excision biopsy of the mitral valve chordae tendineae cyst with mitral valve repair and mitral valve annuloplasty. Histopathologic findings revealed an endothelial lined cyst compatible with a blood filled cyst. She was discharged on her 8th hospital stay stable and improved. Intracardiac blood-filled cysts are rare in adults. Most of them are asymptomatic. Taking the risks of rupture and embolization into consideration, surgical removal of blood cysts in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients should be the preferred option.
