Abstract :

Physiotherapy can play a crucial role in the management of ovarian cancer. While physiotherapy is not a direct treatment for the cancer itself, it can significantly help in managing the side effects of cancer treatments, improving the patient's quality of life, and aiding in the recovery process. Here are some ways in which physiotherapy interventions can be beneficial for individuals with ovarian cancer: Pre-surgery Conditioning: Prior to surgery, physiotherapy can help in conditioning the patient. Strengthening exercises, breathing techniques, and mobility exercises can prepare the patient for the surgery and potentially aid in a faster recovery post-operation. Post-surgery Rehabilitation: After surgery, physiotherapy can assist in regaining strength, mobility, and function. It can help patients regain their range of motion, manage post-operative pain, prevent complications such as lymphedema (swelling), and regain physical independence. Management of Side Effects of Cancer Treatment: Ovarian cancer treatment often involves chemotherapy, which can cause various side effects such as fatigue, weakness, neuropathy, and decreased muscle mass. Physiotherapy can offer tailored exercise programs to address these issues, aiming to improve energy levels, reduce weakness, and enhance overall well-being. Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation: Ovarian cancer treatments or surgeries may impact pelvic floor function. Physiotherapy can help in pelvic floor rehabilitation, which is crucial in restoring bladder and bowel function, and addressing any issues related to incontinence or pelvic pain. Pain Management: Cancer treatments can sometimes cause pain and discomfort. Physiotherapists can employ various techniques such as manual therapy, exercises, and modalities to alleviate pain and improve the patient's comfort. Emotional Support and Well-being: Physiotherapists can offer emotional support through their interactions with patients, providing motivation, encouragement, and a supportive environment, which can positively impact the patient’s mental well-being. Fatigue Management: Ovarian cancer and its treatment often lead to fatigue. Physiotherapists can devise individualized exercise programs to help manage fatigue and improve energy levels. It's important to note that physiotherapy interventions are highly individualized and tailored to each patient's specific needs, depending on their stage of cancer, treatment plan, and overall health status. The goal is to enhance the patient's overall quality of life, promote physical well-being, and support their journey through cancer treatment and recovery.
