Abstract :

Dental implants are currently becoming the gold standard for the replacement of missing teeth. Implantology has become an indispensable part of mainstream dentistry, helping dentists to improve the quality of life of patients. Patient expectations from implant treatment have changed over the years and aesthetics plays an important role in defining what is now called success of rehabilitation. In any case of implant placement, case selection and treatment planning are very crucial to achieve longevity and predictability of the restoration. While replacing a single tooth or a set of teeth, the expectations of the outcome varies with every patient. Every case planned is different depending on the age, gender and personality of the patient. Comprehensive extraoral and intraoral examinations are a must. Proper evaluation of the implant site must be done so that the implant can be placed in a manner that maximizes the esthetics of the final prosthesis. To achieve a predictable and durable restoration, visualization of the final restorative reconstruction is necessary prior to onset of treatment, i.e., a restorative – driven treatment planning is a must indeed. Advances in digital technologies have made it possible for the clinicians to for see the outcome and restore the edentulous site in a truly transformative way. Numerous digital aids like digital impression making, digital diagnostic casts, digital smile designing, CAD/CAM technology, computer generated surgical templates, interactive CBCT etc., are entering into the mainstream stage of adoption, and is being used by approximately 34% of clinicians in North America. Besides allowing practitioners to accurately assess bone volume, bone density and restorative space, the location of the prosthesis can be merged from the digital wax-up and preoperative scan for prosthetically driven implant planning aiding in a highly aesthetic outcome. The ultimate aim of the clinician is to combine clinical knowledge and skills with the available digital aids to achieve an outcome that is not only pleasing to the eye but also functionally harmonious.
