Interventional cardiology has evolved significantly over the past two decades, offering safer and more effective treatment options for patients with coronary artery disease and complex cardiovascular conditions. This presentation explores recent advances in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), intravascular imaging, drug-eluting stent technologies, and person-alized antithrombotic therapies. Special emphasis will be placed on optimizing treatment strategies for high-risk patients, including women, older adults, and individuals with diabetes or chronic kidney disease.
Recent clinical trials have demonstrated the importance of individualized antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies in reduc-ing ischemic events while minimizing bleeding complications. Advances in optical coherence tomography (OCT), intravas-cular ultrasound (IVUS), and physiology-guided coronary intervention have improved procedural outcomes and long-term patient survival. Future perspectives include precision interventional cardiology, digital procedural planning, and multidis-ciplinary cardiovascular care aimed at improving quality of life and reducing the global burden of coronary artery disease.
Roxana Mehran is Professor of Cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA. She is an interna-tionally recognized interventional cardiologist whose research focuses on coronary interventions, antithrombotic therapy, structural heart disease, and cardiovascular outcomes research.
