One crucial aspect affected by inadequate sleep is central appetite regulation – the intricate system that governs our hunger and satiety cues. In this article, we will delve into the relationship between sleep deprivation and central appetite regulation, exploring the physiological mechanisms at play and the potential implications for overall health [1-5].

Central appetite regulation

Central appetite regulation involves a complex interplay of hormones, neurotransmitters, and neural circuits that regulate hunger, satiety, and energy balance. Two key hormones, ghrelin and leptin, play pivotal roles in this regulation. Ghrelin, often referred to as the "hunger hormone," stimulates appetite, while leptin, known as the "satiety hormone," signals fullness to the brain [6].

The impact of sleep deprivation on hormonal balance

Several studies have demonstrated that sleep deprivation disrupts the delicate balance between ghrelin and leptin, leading to an increased appetite and a decreased sense of fullness. Sleepdeprived individuals often experience elevated ghrelin levels, contributing to heightened feelings of hunger. Sleep deprivation is closely linked to insulin resistance and impaired glucose metabolism.
