Osteophytes, also known as bone spurs, are bony growths that develop on the edges of bones, typically where they meet at a joint. They can occur in any joint in the body but are most commonly found in the spine, knees, hips, and hands. While some people may experience no symptoms from osteophytes, others can suffer from pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. One of the primary causes of osteophytes is the natural wear and tear that occurs in joints over time. As we age, the cartilage that cushions our joints can become thinner and less effective at absorbing shock.
