Biography

Dr. Stylianos G. Skias serves, since 2007, as Assistant Professor of Engineering-Environmental Geology, at the Department of Civil Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace.  He graduated in 1974 from the Department of Natural Sciences and Geography of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Next he attended the postgraduate program, M.Sc. course, (jointly) in the Departments of Civil Engineering, Mining Engineering and Earth Sciences at the University of Leeds, G. Britain, and received his M.Sc. in Engineering Geology and Geotechnics in 1975. He has also a diploma (five years studies) in Civil Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace. Besides he has attended various scientific seminars in Universities and Research Institutions in Greece and Abroad (e.g. Imperial College-GB, Colorado-USA, Bratislava-SL, Paris-Fr, Antwerp-Be, Patras-Gr). He has participated in many NATO’s, Scientific Division’s, CCMS and ARW programmes. Recently, he participated in the three years project “RiverCross” (2005-7), “Change on Borders” of the Interreg IIIC programme, regarding the scientific and policy measures for improving and enhancing cooperation on transboundary river basin management, regarding water uses and problems, through the exchange of relative experiences and the evaluation of their successes and failures. His professional experience and employment is briefly as follows: 1979-1996, Registered Consultant (official license by the Greek State) in the fields of Geology, Hydrogeology and Geophysics. 1988-1996, Consultant in Geotechnical Engineering. 1980-‘84 and 1989- ’99: Research Associate, 1999-2007, Lecturer (in all cases) at the Department of Civil Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace.

Research Interest

His area of specialization consists of the assessment and mitigation of geological hazards (mainly: floods, landslides, earthquakes and land-sea coast erosion), natural degradation processes, natural slope stability and geotechnical evaluation of soft and complex rock formations. Besides his research interests include engineering geological aspects of waste disposal and landfill (sitting, construction, monitoring), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Sustainable Development (regarding the geoenvironment), geoenvironmental education and environmental legislation.
