Biography

Dr. Fatemi is the Associate Chair for Neuroscience and Translational Research for the Department of Psychiatry; the Bernstein Endowed Chair in Adult Psychiatry; Professor of Psychiatry, and Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology, at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He received his B.S. in Biology at Baylor University; M.S. and Ph.D. in Anatomy at University of Nebraska Medical Center, and M.D. in Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Fatemi’s research interests include molecular causes and studies of the biological basis of schizophrenia and autism. He is currently the Principal Investigator for a grant from NICHD that explores the GABA and Reelin signaling systems in autism and a grant from NIMH that explores the same systems in schizophrenia and mood disorders. He was also the Principal Investigator of a recently completed grant from NIDA that examined the safety and efficacy of varenicline for smoking cessation in patients with schizophrenia. He has published 102 articles and 26 book chapters, and has edited three books. Dr. Fatemi has served as a regular or Ad Hoc member of grant review committees for the NIH and numerous foundations including Autism Speaks and the March of Dimes He has served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and is currently the Editor in Chief for Open Access Psychiatry. Dr. Fatemi is a Fellow of both the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology.

Research Interest

Neurodevelopmental origins for schizophrenia and autism, pharmacologic modulation of psychosis and autistic behavior, brain plasticity, neurotoxicity and role of synaptic markers in brain development.
