Dr. Renu A. Kowluru did her MS in Biochemistry from Lucknow University, Lucknow, India and received her PhD from Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, & Kanpur University, India. Currently she is working as a Professor in the Department of Endocrinology in Wayne State University, Detroit. She has been honored with various awards and is an Editorial Board member of many journals. She has also published 123 articles in reputed journals.
Our primary research interest is to understand the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Using animal models of diabetic retinopathy, we are trying to identify biochemical and molecular abnormalities that could lead to the development of retinal histopathology seen in diabetic patients. The research is mainly focused on oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage, inflammatory markers, epigenetic modifications, and apoptosis. We expect to elucidate important molecular targets for future pharmacological interventions.
