Biography

Mr Michail Varras received his Medical Degree (M.D.) in Medical School, Aristoteleion University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Later he underwent a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology in First Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kapodistreiakon University of Athens, “Alexandra” General Hospital, Athens, Greece. After that he went to London, U.K. for his oversea study and work in Minimally Invasive Access in Gynecological Surgery and IVF with scholarships from the “Lilian Voudouri” Foundation and in Fetal Medicine with scholarship from the Greek National Health System. He received a Medical Doctorate in Molecular Biology of gynecological tumors from the Medical School, University of Crete, Greece. He continued his postgraduate training and received a Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree in “Health Management” from the Economic School, University of Piraeus, Greece and a Master of Sciences (M.Sc.) Degree in “Reproductive and Regenerative Medicine”, Medical School, Kapodistreiakon University of Athens. Currently he is working as specialist Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at “Elena Venizelou” General Maternity State Hospital, Athens, Greece. His scientific contribution includes 54 original peer review articles, of which 43 as first author, 32 presentations in Greek Congresses and 38 presentations in international Congresses, book chapters and 2 research awards from the Greek Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Mr Varras’ scientific publications are well recognized with more than 500 citations received. He is serving as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.

Research Interest

A primary focus of his research is the molecular anatomy in benign and malignant tumors of the female genital tract and correlation with clinical and pathological patient's parameters. Specifically, he is interested in the effects of IGF system expression in placentas of normal and abnormal pregnancies. Also, his research interests lie in the fetal developmental malformations and in very rare clinical cases in Obstetrics and Gynecology. In addition, he has a longstanding interest in Ultrasonographic, Surgical and Laparoscopic Anatomy. His current research interest is the molecular anatomy of granulosa cells in ovarian follicles of women undergoing assisted reproduction and embryo transfer and correlations with clinical parameters and the influence of carbon-dioxide pneumoperitoneum in molecular factors of tumors in laparoscopic procedures.
