Biography

Pierre Mugabo is a Professor at School of Pharmacy, University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He had done his MBChB (National University of Rwanda), MMed Cardiology (Catholic University of Louvain , Belgium), PhD Pharmacology (University of Ghent, Belgium). He joined the University of the Western Cape in 1997. Mugabo’s work on HIV and Tuberculosis includes studies on the pharmacokinetics of antiretroviral drugs (nevirapine and zidovudine) in premature babies; on the effect of HIV infection on the Pharmacokinetics of first line drugs used for the treatment of tuberculosis; on the effects of HIV infection on the Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs used for the treatment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and on the interactions between antiretroviral and second line anti-TB drugs. Undergraduate, masters and PhD students are involved in the research programme

Research Interest

Research interest include hypertension and congestive cardiac failure, and HIV and Tuberculosis. In the former, he studies the pharmacological properties of plants used in traditional medicine for the treatment of hypertension and congestive cardiac failure. Specifically, he investigates the effects of plant extracts on the blood pressure and heart rate in male normotensive and spontaneously hypertensive Wistar rats.
