Modern medicine has made extraordinary progress in developing innovative drugs capable of treating diseases that were once considered untreatable. One patient improves rapidly, another derives only partial benefit, and a third develops significant adverse effects. While differences in drug absorption and metabolism are often discussed. I believe that pharmacodynamics the study of what drugs do to the body deserves much greater attention as a key determinant of therapeutic success. Pharmacodynamics focuses on the interaction between a drug and its biological target, including receptors, enzymes, ion channels and signaling molecules. These interactions ultimately determine whether a medicine produces the desired therapeutic effect or unintended toxicity.
