Abstract

Molecular Characterization and Phylogenetic Relationships among Microsporidia Cross Infecting Silkworm, Bombyx mori, Isolated from 7 Lepidopteran Pests of Mulberry Gardens Based on Small Subunit rRNA (SSU-rRNA) Gene Sequence Analysis

Ganesan Bhuvaneswari and Basavaraju Surendra Nath

Present study is based on the molecular characterization of seven microsporidian isolates primarily extracted from seven different Lepidopteran pests collected from important sericultural zones in and around Bangalore, Karnataka. The seven spore isolates viz., NIK-55Dp, NIK-57Sl, NIK-64So, NIK-60Pd, NIK-61Pp, NIK-63Ec and VIK-52Pr have been studied along with the Nosema type species-NIK-1s_mys. Molecular characterization using PCR based, small subunit ribosomal r RNA (SSU-rRNA) gene analysis was carried out in order to establish the spore identity and to derive phylogenetic relationships among the key isolates. The SSU-rRNA gene sequence homology was analysed using BLAST, which placed, six of our spore isolates in the genus of Nosema except spore isolate: VIK-52 Pr that was clustering along with the genus of Vairimorpha.
