Drug development is a multidisciplinary process that transforms a scientific concept into a safe and effective therapeutic product for human use. The process integrates biology, chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, regulatory science and clinical medicine to identify promising compounds, evaluate their safety and establish their therapeutic efficacy. Although technological innovations have accelerated many stages of development, bringing a new medicine to market remains a lengthy, expensive and scientifically demanding endeavor. The global burden of chronic diseases, infectious disorders and rare genetic conditions has increased the demand for innovative medicines. Modern drug development seeks not only to discover new therapeutic molecules but also to optimize their safety, effectiveness and accessibility. Advances in computational modeling, molecular biology and precision medicine have significantly transformed traditional development pathways, enabling researchers to identify promising drug candidates more efficiently. Many drugs were discovered through observations of natural products.
