Recent Advancements in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic, systemic inflammatory disease characterized by autoantibodies and immune complex deposition in multiple target organs.   SLE is a prototypic autoimmune disease with diverse clinical manifestations. Symptoms of SLE can range from mild to life threatening.  Although the disease is primarily more prone to young women, the pediatric and geriatric population have a more balanced sex ratio.  In recent years we have seen significant improvement in understanding the immune system by targeting particular cytokines; however, like many other autoimmune diseases there is still a vast amount that we have yet to understand.

In this Special Issue of “Recent Advancements of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus,” we are looking for articles that deliver further into the underlying mechanisms of SLE.  In this issue, we will also discuss the most prevalent research being conducted in the field as well as promising new treatment options for our patients.
