A genetically modified organism (GMO), is also known as a transgenic organism and it is any organism whose genetic material has been modified using genetic engineering techniques. GMOs are the source of genetically modified foods and are also widely used in scientific research and to produce goods other than food. Agricultural plants are one of the best examples of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Some benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture are increased crop yields, reduced costs for food or drug production, reduced need for pesticides, enhanced nutrient composition and food quality, resistance to pests and disease, greater food security, and medical benefits to the world's growing population
