Biography

Prof John Brown was born in London, England in 1952. He received his B.Pharm. degree from School of Pharmacy, University of London in 1976 and worked in hospital pharmacies until 1979. He then studied for a Ph.D. at Leicester Polytechnic (now De Montfort University) and received his Ph.D. in 1983. He was then appointed as a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Sunderland and then in 1985 worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry for Upjohn Ltd. His first academic post was at Leicester Polytechnic (1985) and then at University of Bradford, where he was appointed Deputy Head of School in 2001. His research has focused on the development of novel anticancer drugs, with expertise in anthracycline (e.g. doxorubicin) anthraquinone (e.g. mitozantrone) and indoloquinone (e.g. cryptolepine) research. Some novel cryptolepine analogues have shown promise as potential anticancer agents. In 2003 he founded the Dept.of Pharmacy at Kingston University, and in 2006 became Head of the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry.
