Abstract

Psychiatric Disorders Biological Foundations, Clinical Diversity and Evolving Approaches to Care

Daniel Carter*

Psychiatric disorders comprise a broad spectrum of conditions that affect cognition, emotion, perception, behavior and social functioning. These disorders influence millions of individuals worldwide and contribute significantly to disability, reduced quality of life and increased healthcare utilization. Although psychiatric disorders differ considerably in their symptoms and severity, they share the common feature of disrupting an individual's ability to function effectively in personal, academic, occupational and social environments. Advances in neuroscience, psychology, genetics and behavioral medicine have transformed the understanding of these conditions, emphasizing that they arise through complex interactions between biological vulnerability and environmental influences rather than from a single causative factor.
