Abstract

Prognosis of Periodontitis: Review Article with an Updated Clinical Perspective

Objectives

The aim of this perspective is to links between the prognosis and the periodontal disease according to the latest classification of periodontal disease. Recognizing the prognosis of each tooth and risk factors for disease progression are important during periodontal therapy and supportive periodontal treatment because it directly affects the management of the condition. Different systems of periodontal prognosis were established, which complicate the selection of proper prognostic system in clinical practice, furthermore, the continuous updating of periodontal disease classifications represent a real challenge for most of the dentists in linking between different prognostic systems and the new classification of periodontal disease.

Results

Stage I, II and stage IV periodontitis have good, fair and hopeless prognoses respectively; which could be decided with a reasonable degree of precision. However, poor and questionable prognoses were likely to change to other stages because they depend on a large number of variables that can interrelate in unpredictable ways.

Conclusion

The latest classification of periodontal disease facilitates determination the prognosis of different stages and grades of periodontitis.
