Abstract

Pharmacology as the Foundation of Precision Therapeutics in Modern Healthcare

Ethan J Carter*

Pharmacology has long served as the scientific bridge between basic biomedical research and clinical medicine. While advances in molecular biology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence have transformed healthcare, pharmacology remains the discipline that explains how therapeutic agents interact with biological systems to prevent, manage, or cure disease. Beyond the discovery of new medicines, pharmacology provides the evidence needed to determine optimal dosage, predict adverse reactions, understand drug interactions and evaluate long term therapeutic outcomes. As healthcare increasingly shifts toward individualized f identifying these sources of variability and developing individualized therapeutic strategies that maximize efficacy while minimizing toxicity. An important contributor to this personalized approach is pharmacogenomics, which examines how inherited genetic variation influences drug response. Genetic differences affecting drug-metabolizing enzymes, transport proteins, or therapeutic targets may alter both drug effectiveness and safety. Incorporating genetic information into prescribing decisions allows clinicians to select appropriate medications and optimize dosage regimens for individual patients. Although widespread clinical implementation remains limited o by treatment strategies, the importance of pharmacology continues to expand rather than diminish. Modern medicine faces an increasingly diverse spectrum of diseases, ranging from chronic metabolic disorders and neurodegenerative conditions to emerging infectious diseases and rare genetic syndromes.
