Abstract

Neurobiological and Psychological Mechanisms of Emotional Regulation in Mental Health

Ethan Marshall*

Mental Emotional regulation refers to the ability to recognize, understand and modify emotional responses in a manner that promotes psychological well being and adaptive functioning. It represents a fundamental component of human behavior, influencing interpersonal relationships, decision making, stress management and overall mental health. Conversely, persistent difficulties in regulating emotions are associated with increased vulnerability to various forms of mental illness, including depression, anxiety and personality related conditions. The process of emotional regulation involves a dynamic interaction between cognitive, behavioral and physiological systems. Brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus and anterior cingulate cortex contribute significantly to evaluating emotional stimuli and coordinating appropriate responses. The prefrontal cortex exerts top down control over the amygdala, helping individuals suppress excessive fear, anger, or sadness.
