Research is being done to use stem cells for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Human embryonic stem cells may be grown in vivo and stimulated to produce pancreatic β-cells and later transplanted to the patient. Its success depends on response of the patient’s immune system and ability of the transplanted cells to proliferate, differentiate and integrate with the target tissue.
