Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain resulting from injury to the nervous system. The injury can be to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or the peripheral nervous system (nerves outside the brain and spinal cord). Neuropathic pain can occur after trauma and many diseases such as multiple sclerosis and stroke.

Neuropathic pain is accompanied by tissue injury. The nerve fibers themselves may be damaged, dysfunctional, or injured with neuropathic pain. Due to damaging of nerve fibers they send incorrect signals to other pain centers. The impact of nerve fiber injury includes a change in nerve function both at the site of injury and areas around the injury.
