Angiotensin

Angiotensin a peptide hormone causes constriction of blood vessels is a part of renin angiotensin system. It stimulates the release of aldosterone which promotes sodium retention in distal nephron of kidney. Types of angiotensin are angiotensin I, II, III and IV.

Angiotensin II is a hormone that circulates in the blood and has many effects on the cardiovascular system. More amounts of angiotensin II results in excess fluid retainment by the body as well as raise in blood pressure which is a common problem. Low angiotensin levels results in control of plasma sodium and potassium concentrations, regulation of blood volume and pressure and impairment in mechanisms of hormones. The renin-angiotensin system is also activated by other hormones such as thyroid ,corticosteroids and oestrogen. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) are the class of drugs that block the body’s production of angiotensin II.
