Affected patients present a multiplicity of problems and effective management involves a wide range of specialists, they need multidisciplinary help with orthodontic and dental treatment, speech, as well as primary and often secondary surgical operations until facial growth is complete. The orthodontist plays a major role in treating cleft patients as a major member of the cleft team. The orthodontist??s role includes neonatal orthopedics, orthodontic preparation for bone graft in the mixed dentition and the orthodontic preparation for orthognathic surgery. In this lecture, the clinical role of the orthodontist will be demonstrated through the several stages of treatment of the cleft lip and palate patient, with a focus on the contemporary standards and techniques used to treat these patients in Palestine.
