Robotic nissen fundoplication: Alternative surgical technique for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatal hernia

Abstract :

The nissen fundoplication remains the gold standard in management of hiatal hernia as well as gastroesophageal reflux disease when proper patient selection is carefully employed. Success of the operation depends greatly on patient selection as well as meticulous surgical dissection and repair of the defensive mechanisms at the gastro-oesophageal junction. The surgeon will discuss the benefits of application of the da Vinci platform to performance of anti-reflux operations and concomitant reduction and repair of all types of hiatal hernias. The discussion will include post operative care, operative metrics as well as complication and conversion issues.

Biography :

C.R. Hall is a board certified general surgeon who did his residency at The Ohio State University Medical Centre in Columbus, Ohio. He stayed there to do a fellowship in advanced minimally invasive surgery which included bariatrics, GI surgery and robotic training. He became a da Vinci console surgeon in 2009. After he completed his fellowship he moved to Melbourne, Florida and launched the Robotic Surgery Program for Melbourne Hospital where he is currently the Directory of Robotic and Bariatric surgery at South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, Florida. Over the past year he has performed hundreds of robotic fundoplications as well as heller myotomies. He is a da Vinci proctor and has the largest case volume in the region. He also applies the da Vinci system to cholecystectomies, adrenalectomies, gastrectomies and colon and rectal surgery.
