Reasons for third molar extraction at College of Dentistry, Taibah University: Compliance with established guidelines

Abstract:

A retrospective cross-sectional study with sample size of 177 male patients between the age group of 18 to 65 were studied with aimed to identify the most common reasons of third molars extraction in patients attending the outpatient oral surgery clinic of Taibah University, Medina Munawwarah. Patients treated between 2011-2013 were included in the study to see compliances with establish guideline for third molar extraction. Information regarding extraction of third molar was used to collect from Kodak R4 clinical practice management software and it was further confirmed by contacting the patient by mobile phone for more information. Orthopantomogram (OPG) was used for those cases whose clinical note was not available in R4. Most of general dentists in screening clinics was referring a patient for extraction of third molar when it started to cause resorption to the second molar (94% of dentists), followed by unrestorable carious tooth or other related oral pathology (88%). Mostly caries and periodontal diseases were occurring in older age group were the major reason for third molar extraction, while recurrent pericoronitis occurring in younger age group and This was the major reason for third molar extraction. Prophylactic surgical extraction of third molar was not a common practice in our environment. Compliance rate with NICE guidelines were around 90% respectively.
