Radioisotope occult lesion localization (ROLL): A novel technique for managing impalpable breast lesions and breast cancer

Abstract:

For impalpable breast lesions, the common method involves image guided (ultrasound, mammogram or MRI-guided) hookwire localization. Problems with hookwire localization include a high miss rate (reported up to 40% miss rate), longer procedure time (translating to higher cost) and pain to the patient. A new procedure, named radioisotope occult lesion localization (ROLL) allows for these pre-cancerous or cancerous lumps to be localized accurately and painlessly through injection of a radioactive tracer using fine insulin needles. This procedure can be used in combination with sentinel lymph node biopsy for malignant cases (termed SNOLL). Dr Tan is the pioneer of ROLL in the region and introduced the procedure to Singapore in 2011.

Biography :

Felicia Tan is actively involved in promoting breast cancer awareness. She is a Committee Member on various breast cancer support groups locally-The Breast Cancer Foundation (Singapore’s largest breast cancer support group) as well as Alpine Blossoms (KK Breast Unit’s support group lead by health care professionals for breast cancer survivors). She has also been invited to give lectures and public talks on breast cancer related issues both locally and internationally. She is a Member of Bali’s International Women’s Association and Bali Pink Ribbon which is involved in promotion of breast cancer awareness and screening in Bali, Indonesia.
