Abstract:

Background: Psychosocial problem among the adolescent is one of the major global challenge. Adolescent is transition phase ranging from 10 to 19 years. Most of these psychosocial problems are manifested at this stage of life. Adolescent are more vulnerable to psychosocial problem as they face biological, physical, social and cultural transition simultaneously. Factors like personal, family, school and community have great influence on psychosocial status among the adolescents. Objective: The objective of this study is to assess psychosocial status among secondary level school going adolescent and associated factors. Methodology: This study is a cross-sectional study conducted among 648 secondary level school going adolescents of Palungtar Municipality, Gorkha, Nepal. Structured self-administered questionnaire and general health questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) were used. Univariate, bivariate (chi-square test & independent t-test) and multivariate (binary logistic regression) analysis were applied for assessing association between dependent and independent variables. Results: In this study, 39.0% of the respondents were found to have psychosocial problem. Variables such as age (AOR 1.172, p=0.048), school type (AOR1.879, p=0.018), perceived to be in any problem (AOR 1.879, p=0.002) and parental support for study (AOR 1.627, p=0.010) were found to be strong predictors of psychosocial problem of secondary level school going adolescents. Conclusion: Psychosocial problem among secondary level school going adolescent was in alarming situation. Thus, to improve the problem among adolescents a comprehensive effort was to be initiated.
