Abstract :

Aim: Show inaccuracy and inconsistency of nomenclature in defining procedures described as vaginoplasty. Use of scientific descriptions of vaginal operations important for practitioners and patients. Methods: Review of the literature including peer reviewed articles related to cosmetic gynecology, anecdotal, marketing and advertising literature, and Stedman's Medical dictionary Results: The term vaginoplasty was originally used to describe the de novo creation of a new vagina. Recently, the term has been used to describe procedures ranging from a variety of vulvar aesthetic procedures to vaginal and perineal narrowing. Stedman's Medical Dictionary defines vaginoplasty as plastic (molding or shaping), procedures of the vagina. Different specific procedures are available for specific problems. Discussion: Accuracy and consistency of nomenclature and in description of procedures is important in the development of cosmetic plastic gynecology. Inaccuracy and misleading terminology leads to confusion and controversy. Using consistent scientific nomenclature and descriptions of procedures, avoiding deceptive language, basing diagnosis on the same published classifications, and consistent performance of procedures is necessary for the development of CPG.
