Abstract:

The goal of evidence-based orthodontics (EBO) is to assist the clinician in delivering the most effective, efficient, and predictable treatment outcomes. Evidence-based orthodontics now attracts much attention, but not all are impressed. Experience based protocol is not sufficient, but the standard of care should be focused on conclusive scientific research in conjunction with clinical expertise, keeping in mind the most important criteria to provide the best for our patients. The strongest evidence is gained from randomized clinical trials. Properly performed meta-analysis studiesprovide the second-best evidence. The third level of evidence is retrospective or prospective longitudinal studies that monitor a group over time. Fourthlevel is the review article. Fifth level is a cross-sectional study that analyzes data from a single point in time. Case studies are typically the weakest evidence and are ranked at the sixth level. Sources of bias in randomized clinical trials, types of bias and remedies were reviewed. The take home message, EBO is an integration of the best research evidence, clinical expertise and patient values for best treatment outcomes.
